Rafael “Mestre” Cordeiro is a Brazilian mixed martial artist that is the founder of Kings MMA in Huntington Beach, California. He is also a former professional MMA fighter. He originally started coaching at Chute Box where he had the opportunity to work alongside Wanderlie Silva, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Fabricio Werdum, Anderson Silva, and Cris Cyborg. Cordeiro is known for having one of the best teams to compete in Pride and UFC. He retired from Chute Box in 2009 and eventually opened Kings MMA in 2010. In 2020, he had the opportunity to train Mike Tyson for his fight with Roy Jones Jr. Rafael Cordeiro has also trained fighters such as Giga Chikadze, Kelvin Gastelum, Marvin Vettori, Beneil Dariush, and Murilo Rua.

During that time he completed the competitions CP X CB - Capoeira vs. Chute Box, BVF 4, IVC 7 - The New Champions, IVC 9 - The Revenge, and VYJ 1999 - The Vale Tudo Japan 1999. During that time he was able to win his matches against Daniel Daniel (1993), Coshminho da Silva (1996), Altair de Oliveira (1996), and Henry Matamoros (1999). All of his matches took place in Brazil except for his fight at the Vale Tudo Japan event in 1999.

Rafael Cordeiro’s best fight took place at the 1999 IVC 9 - The Revenge. Cordeiro was placed against Henry Matamoros. While the entire event is hard to find online, the clips you can see speak for themselves. The rules of fighting seemed to be very different in 1999 from now. The event was brutal with Cordeiro constantly hitting Matamoros while they are standing. He is even able to land a few harsh takedowns where he would then kick Matamoros as he lay on the ground. At a point in the match, Cordeiro is able to maintain a mount position where he is able to get a mean crossface that transitioned into powerful punches. He backs off into a half-guard-type position, where he finishes the match with a few fatal blows. Matamoros’s face is covered in his own blood. The match went for the entire thirty minutes ending with a unanimous decision in favor of Rafael Cordeiro. This match won Cordeiro the IVC Lightweight Championship. In the end, his speed and the powerful standing game won him the match.

Rafael Cordeiro only ever lost two of his six professional fights. His first loss was against Sergio Melo at the IVC 7: The New Champions event that took place on August 23, 1998. He lost from a disqualification in the first round because of a rope grab. He also lost to Rumina Sato at the VTJ 1999 - Vale Tudo Japan event on December 11, 1999. He lost in the first round at the fifty-eight-second mark to a kneebar. The submission is what lost him in the match.

Rafael Cordeiro’s Injuries

There are no recorded incidents of Rafael Cordeiro ever experiencing any serious injuries. While he has not experienced any serious injuries, some of his students and teammates have. Rafael dos Anjos, former UFC Lightweight Champion, was training under Cordeiro between the years 2012 and 2016. Anjos had to drop out of UFC 196 because of a serious foot injury he sustained during training. It is said that he kicked his sparring partner’s knee and then was unable to walk correctly. As Rafael do Anjos’s coach at the time, he felt very sympathetic toward him and was disappointed that his student was unable to compete. 

Is Rafael Cordeiro Retired?

While Rafael Cordeiro is retired from professional fighting, he is still a coach and gym owner. Cordeiro’s last professional fight took place on December 11, 1999, and it was against Rumina Sato. In 2010 he opened Kings MMA, where he still works to this day.
